    Court Reporting Program

    Court Reporting Program

    General Information

    What is Court Reporting?

Court Reporting involves using shorthand skills and a stenotype machine to transcribe spoken or recorded speech into a written document, creating the official transcript for court proceedings, hearings, testimonies, etc. Court Reporters play a critical role in the legal system and are in high demand across the country. Court Reporters are employed by court reporting companies for court systems or may work on a freelance basis. Also, they may find work captioning spoken words for the deaf or hard-of-hearing for television or public events.

The Court Reporting Certificate Program at Tulsa Community College (TCC)

TCC is the only public institution in Oklahoma offering a Court Reporting Certificate Program. The program encompasses six (6) modules over the course of 66 weeks with students attending year round. Students will be introduced to realtime stenographic machine shorthand writing used for court reporting to broadcast captioning transcriptions. Students will also learn about conflict-free writing, and how to distinguish English homophones and know the legal, medical and technical terminology. Throughout the program, you will work on building up your speed on the stenotype machine, until it reaches upwards of 200 words per minute with high accuracy.

Career Opportunities with a Court Reporting Certificate

With a Court Reporting Certificate, you will be qualified for positions that include court reporters, TV captionist and/or working for the deaf and hard of hearing. Starting salaries approxmiate $45,000/year.

      Music

      TCC Community Band and Orchestra

      About the Program

The TCC Community Band was founded in 1978 by Jerrold Lawless (1934-2016), a former music instructor and conductor.  The Community Orchestra was established three years later (1981).  For nearly four decades, both the Community Band and Orchestra have delighted local audiences with performances that range from classical collections to Broadway selections, and much more.

Many of our band and orchestra members are current or retired music school instructors, and some have non-music careers. A few members can claim they have contributed to the development of the band and orchestra since the very early days of the program, and they are joined each season by equally-talented new members.

Both Band and Orchestra rehearsals are held at TCC's Southeast Campus PACE (VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education). Twice each year our Community Band and Orchestra offer different concert programs.  They are open to the public, and also held at the PACE.
